You're on your own when it comes to creating characters, just don't include any lore shattering new stuff such as your character being from some crazy technologically advanced Atlantis-like nation or a space creature who has a ship hovering above the planet capable of unleashing mass destruction. That kind of thing. Also, don't create any new races with natural magical attributes to circumvent the next rule: Your character can't know magic right off the bat unless it's known by your race naturally. You need to learn it in-game from one of the designated spell masters (and they need to be able to say you learned stuff from them) or apply for it on the forums. If your character has any unusual abilities they will need to apply for it as well.

Having rare items such as magical swords that can create a shield around your character that can deflect lightning bolts isn't allowed either. Gotta apply for dat.
